Job Summary
The Olathe Fire Department (OFD) seeks a motivated, degree seeking high school or college student for an internship that will provide an opportunity for gaining knowledge, training and experience related to the fire service. Candidates will work closely with various sections and programs which may include fire operations, special operations, EMS, public education, fire prevention, emergency management, and homeland security. Candidates will participate in a research project and presentation as part of a team.
Collaborate with staff on various projects and programs
Share key safety and preparedness messages with the public in a variety of settings
Build relationships that foster continued collaboration with community groups
Education: High school diploma required; college coursework in public administration, community health, or related field preferred.
Experience: Sophomore, junior or senior undergraduate standing, graduate students and recent graduates considered. Excellent communication and writing skills required.
Required Skills:
Ability to learn quickly and perform in a fast-paced environment
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
Must maintain a high level of professionalism
Works well independently and in a team
Schedule: Preference will be given to those able to work full-time with flexibility for classes, sports practices, jobs and other obligations given. Some evening and/or weekend work may be required.
Must successfully pass a background investigation, pre-employment physical and drug screen.
The OFD plans to hire three or four interns for this summer.
It is the intent of the Olathe Fire Department to make this opportunity available to as many people as possible. First-time candidates will be preferred over previous OFD interns.
Hiring Range: $15.50-$17.50/hour
Education: High School Student (entering senior year next Fall)
Experience: Current High School Student with an interest in Fire Service.
