The City of Woodinville Public Works Department is seeking an enthusiastic summer intern that will have the opportunity to gain experience in stormwater and surface water management, civil engineering, road and street operations, and other essential operations of the City. This position will be primarily focused on stormwater and surface water management, with the opportunity to experience other areas of Public Works. City staff are dedicated to providing the selected intern with the tools and knowledge to successfully launch a career in local government. The Public Works intern is a paid part-time internship program designed for undergraduate, graduate, or advanced degree students who are interested in gaining experience in stormwater and surface water management, civil engineering, road and street operations, and other essential operations of the City. This internship will be primarily focused on stormwater and surface water management, with the opportunity to experience other areas of Public Works. The intern will be supervised by the Surface Water Program Coordinator in the Public Works department.

The Public Works Department Intern will have an opportunity to learn about Public Works operations at a hig hlevel. The workplan for the intern in coordination with various City staff and may be changed at the City's discretion as needs arise.
Stormwater and Surface Water Management
- Participate in the stormwater Source Control Program, a pollution prevention program, including supporting business inspections, outreach, and program development
- Assisting in developing and coordinating programs required by the City's NPDES Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit
- Conduct surface water education and outreach activities, including social media postings and newsletter articles
- Support storm water facility inspection programs
- Collect water quality samples and assist in water quality investigations
- Provide field and office support for the Surface Water Utility
- Attend in-person and virtual meetings related to stormwater
- Shadowing staff in other lines of Public Works’ functions to learn about engineering, planning, and maintenance as it relates to surface water management and local government
Community Engagement and Business Outreach
- Assist with gathering community input, coordination of community events, open houses, development of digital and print communications, and basic graphic design.
- Assist with development and implementation of various aspects of City education and outreach mailers; Behavior Change Campaign data collection and business outreach; Webpages; and Stormwater Management Action Plan
Engineering Support
Shadow professional engineers and provide field and office engineering support for on-site inspections with a Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead; calculation of transportation impact fees; engineering considerations associated with permit review; and responding to citizen public safety and right of way maintenance concerns.
Contract and Grant Preparation and Management
- Assist with reviewing and creating materials for various contracts.
- Assist with development of grant application materials, reviewing grant applications for City funding, and preparing communications and other materials for each.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience, and Training:
This internship requires applicants to have completed at least two years of undergraduate study in environmental science or studies, water resources, civil engineering, or similar subject(s). Applicants that meet the minimum requirement and are currently enrolled in either undergraduate or graduate programs or have recently graduated from such program(s) within the past 12 months will also be considered.
This position is designed to be flexible. Specific job tasks, working hours, and compensation may vary depending on a candidate's skills, interests, schedule, and experience.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of stormwater and surface water management principles.
- Professional engineering concepts, techniques, practices and principles.
- Knowledge of personal computers and computer software, including Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of digital communication techniques, including web and social media. Knowledge of graphic design programs, including Adobe products and Canva is a plus.
- Knowledge of LID principles, stormwater education and outreach principles, stormwater pollution source control principles, and/or stormwater NPDES permit compliance is a plus.
- Knowledge of ESRI GIS software is a plus.
- Ability to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and actively seek guidance when needed.
- Ability to effectively plan and organize work and complete tasks within prescribed timeframes.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
JOB DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is primarily performed in an indoor setting, with occasional fieldwork. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must frequently sit and talk or hear; occasionally stand, walk, grip or feel with hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The nature of the work has frequent interruptions. Requires strong public communication skills. May occasionally be required to work beyond normal working hours, weekends, and holidays. The ability to operate a personal computer is required. This position may also require substantial phone use and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences. Assigned duties are to be performed while adhering to the City’s operational policies, safety rules, and procedures.
